Jean Lim Hui Qin
Interview with Jean Lim Hui Qin, top student of the 2015 O-level exam, who has secured 10A1s, including a third language, French. An extremely conscientious and humble student, Jean believes that success only comes with hard work.
Any thoughts regarding your achievement at the O-level exam ?
I’m so happy because I worked very hard for it! It’s also not easy because I’ve always faced very high expectations to perform very well academically.
What are the secrets of your success (academic and non-academic) ?
I believe it’s to be disciplined, on task and prioritise the things that I want to do. There’s a difference between things that I need to do and things that I want to do. Having a clear focus on what I want to achieve helps me to spend time on things that are necessary. For example, during the period when I was preparing for the O-level English oral exam, I kept practising reading such as having a precise pronunciation and a clear articulation, especially the “th” sound. In fact, I was practising so much that I was talking to myself rather frequently! I also consulted my English teacher on a regular basis regarding the techniques to develop insightful responses for spoken interaction.
The other secret to success is to live a balanced life. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my CCA, Art Club. I always felt safe with friends from my CCA and together, we were engaged in therapeutic and aesthetically pleasing activities which helped me to relax.
How has YTSS played a part in your success ?
YTSS provides a very conducive and safe environment for all students, regardless of our learning abilities and learning styles. Teachers are always available to conduct small group coaching and this is extremely helpful for us to check on our understanding of concepts. We’re lucky to have such dedicated teachers.
I’ve also benefitted from the various programmes such as going on a cross cultural exchange trip to Japan where I got to learn more about the Japanese culture, which is a step closer to being a global thinker. Through this, I also interacted with YTzens from other classes and streams, other than those from my class. It has been an enriching experience.
The education that YTSS provides is indeed a holistic one.
Which YTSS value resonates the strongest with you ?
I think it’s resilience. Life will get tougher because we will face more challenges. It’s therefore important to have that inner strength to not give up easily.
Any advice for your juniors?
There are opportunities for everyone in YTSS. Cherish all opportunities and participate as much as you can. You won’t regret it !
