Basketball

Yishun Town Basketball is a training ground to develop outstanding individuals with an immense passion for sports and excellence. By nurturing our players’ innate leadership abilities, they develop high mental and emotional resilience which gives them a competitive edge over any challenge in life.

YTSS Basketball provides an effective platform which nurtures individuals with an avid passion for sports and the pursuit of excellence in one’s heart, mind, body and soul. We seek to give our players the opportunity not only to shine on court but also develop their resilience, leadership skills and camaraderie with their teammates. Being a team sport, our players learn the importance of working together as one as they continue honing their physical fitness and basketball skills.

During the Zonal and National Competitions, our players did our school proud by showing us what it means to give a hundred and ten percent effort into playing every single game. Despite having to cope with the hectic school schedule and the rigorous training sessions, our players have shown that it is possible to excel academically and in the sports arena.

Always striving to refine their basketball techniques, our players gained meaningful competition experience and exposure by taking part in external leagues during the school holidays. One major highlight of the year was when our players took part in the Junior NBA programme which is being conducted across Southeast Asia in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. During this programme, the participants are trained in the fundamentals of basketball and learn core values like sportsmanship, a positive attitude and respect. Out of 200 students, ten boys and five girls were selected as the inaugural Junior NBA Singapore All Stars. Xie Muqi brought glory to the school as she was chosen as one of the top five girls who embarked on the overseas NBA experience in China. In addition, Nur Afifah Bte Misban achieved the ‘Best Hustle Award’ during this Junior NBA basketball clinic as well. These deserving athletes are undoubtedly good role models for their peers in exemplifying resilience and excellence.

Such achievements do not come by easily; the players dedicate a lot of time and effort on regular long distance runs and drills to better their speed and accuracy. The foundation of our success lies in having a committed coach, teachers and players. Our training sessions also include a lot of creativity in improvising training methods to better cater to the needs of our players. Undergoing these training sessions has definitely helped our girls to overcome their own limits, become stronger and more agile players who are also exemplary students.

Their love for the sport drives the team to improve their mastery of basketball skills. They have gained valuable competition experience by participating in external leagues during the school holidays. For example, our girls took part in the Li-Ning Cup, U14 T-Net Competition & Invitational Tournaments this year and emerged as Champions. The players built up their stamina through regular long distance runs and drills to train their speed and accuracy. Our success was built on the legacy of a group of dedicated coaches, teachers and players. We use a combination of training methods and individualised exercise programmes to help our girls overcome challenges and achieve their goals. This allowed us to develop stronger, faster more agile team players. Our coach and teachers insist on good sportsmanship, resilience, integrity and respect from all our players both on and off the court.

Our players’ dedication in balancing their CCA commitments and studies is also commendable. Our 2014 Basketball Girls graduates are recipients of the National School Colour Awards and have achieved academic excellence. The 2014 graduates obtained an average point of 13 for their L1R4 in the GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations.  Among all, our ‘B’ 2014 Captain, Nicole Beh Xin Yi performed exceptionally well with an L1R4 of 8 points. Through sheer dedication and perseverance, each of them has left a living legacy and blazed a path for future YTSS players to follow.

In 2017, the Yishun Town Basketball Boys Team was formed. They are currently being coached by Mr Zhou Zhenjie. This year YTBB participated in ActiveSg Developmental Basketball League and Elite Basketball League which gives the players a chance to gain meaning game experiences and exposure to the field of basketball as this team is young yet full of drive. With a committed team of players, coach and teachers, we hope to continue to instill the spirit of overcoming each own limits and set high expectations of themselves as an athlete.
