Symphonic Band

The Yishun Town Winds Orchestra, or more endearingly known as Y-TWO to her members, has come a long way since its inception. Over the years, her members have had the opportunity to gain different types of exposure in terms of performances. Apart from the usual in-school events, Y-TWO has also taken part in various public performances. Some notable performances include Yishun Town Secondary School’s bi-annual public concert, Seasons!, the Parade of the Bands at Orchard Road as well as other Arts presentations within the community.

During the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF), an annual event organised by the ministry of Education to celebrate the achievement of our youths in their co-curricular activities, Y-TWO has also gone from strength to strength over time. Her members have managed to consistently attain the Silver Award over the past few years, as well as the Certificate of Achievement in the year 2013. In 2015, Y-TWO has also managed to eventually achieve the Certification of Distinction, an achievement in which Y-TWO is extremely proud of.

Under the baton of Y-TWO’s capable and excellent conductors, Mr Goh Kim Seng, Mdm Tham Siew Haw and Mr Thomas Chen, Y-TWO continues to strive towards excellence as she now works towards her next major performance for the upcoming SYF Celebrations in 2017. Y-TWO hopes to continue to achieve the Certificate of Distinction for SYF.

One of Y-TWO’s achievements in 2016 was participating in Seasons! 4 which took place at Paya Lebar Methodist Girls School this year in April. During the performance, Y-TWO showcased some well-known pieces, as well as provided the background music for the school’s Drama Club as members act or sing during the musical. The concert was a resounding success and served as one of the main highlights towards Yishun Town's 30th Anniversary Celebrations. On top of that, Y-TWO, for the first time since her inception, took part in the Parade of the Bands, which saw a myriad of different school bands marching past Orchard Road, while showcasing their musical talent. It was the first time Y-TWO had participated in a marching performance and it sure was an eye-opening experience for members of Y-TWO.

Other performances of note include the Band Fiesta @ West Mall in August, which saw Y-TWO performing for the public in conjunction with National Day Celebrations. The band performed a varied repertoire of National Day songs which left the crowd feeling patriotic and very entertained.

In April this year, YTWO participated in the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging Competition. YTWO delivered the set piece ‘Hermes’ by Hayato Hirose perfectly and won the praises of the adjudicators. YTWO also brought the audience into a majestic and starry world through the competition's choice piece, ‘To be Vivid Stars’, composed by prominent Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa. Members began working on the competition pieces as early as in July 2014. With unwavering determination to achieve the prestigious Certification of Distinction they missed in 2013, band members put in hours of hard work in practicing to attain perfection. Weeks before the competition day, YTWO overcame challenges of fatigue but their perseverance and tenacity to achieve success honoured them their well-deserved Certificate of Distinction. The graduating batch of Secondary 4 YTWO members led YTWO to a greater height to live and leave a legacy of excellence for their juniors, who took over with pride and confidence.

In August this year, as part of the nation’s SG50 celebrations, YTWO participated in the annual National Day Parade (NDP) on 9 August, to celebrate the nation’s 50th birthday together with many others at the Padang. Members from YTWO were part of the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) band and were involved in the parade segment of this year’s NDP. Preparations for the nation’s birthday started as early as May 2015, where members from YTWO spent numerous Saturday afternoons rehearsing, making sure that their marching were of top-notch standard. The nation’s birthday celebration did not stop there. YTWO was also involved in the City March where they dished out our national songs with gusto while marching from the Padang to Marina Bay Floating Platform. On the whole, YTWO is very proud to have been a part of the nation’s SG50 celebrations and this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience we will live to tell.
