National School's Basketball Championship, 12th April
12 April 2018 - a date that will forever be immortalised in the history of YTSS. The date that saw the ‘B’ Division basketball girls fight their toughest against the titans of the game in the finals of the 2018 National Schools Games Competition, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School. It was also the day that saw the spirit of YTSS rise, roar and reverberate throughout the OCBC Arena and the school hall where teachers, parents and YTzens chorused cheers of support in unison to egg the girls on. Months of hard work coupled with an unwavering spirit that saw the girls pick themselves up after every setback brought them to where they eventually reached.

VIA Program : Baking and Business Skills, 26th April

YTzens from 4T8 showcased their baking and business talents by selling their Pastry creation like pies and cupcakes as well as jewellery products during lower secondary recess as part of their overseas VIA fund-raising efforts.

Functional Health Screening, 28th April
YTSS has opened our doors to Singaporeans above the age of 60 for a functional health screening. Many of our YTzens volunteered to come back to school on a Saturday morning to give back to our society and show us what it means to be a caring community.

Most Caring Teacher by YTzens, 16th May 
The Caring Teacher Awards is a biennial event that pays tribute to teachers who show care and concern for the holistic development of their students, and go the extra mile to ensure their charges grow up to be confident and independent learners. Started in 1996, the Caring Teacher Awards is organised by the National Institute of Education, Singapore with support from ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd and the Ministry of Education. 

These are teachers who our YTzens voted for because they feel their teachers are selfless, concerned, nurturing, dedicated, authentic and of course, caring. This year, YTSS is proud to share that four of our teachers have been awarded THE CARING TEACHER AWARDS 2018. 

They are:

    • Mr Ramthan Bin Ab Wahid
    • Mr Muhammad Tirmidzi B Abdul Ghani

YTSS Open Day, 18th May 
This Open day was the first in a series of three touch points that Yishun Town has planned for parents and students who are interested to find out more about YTSS.  The event kick started with our Principal, Ms Sharon Yeo sharing with parents and students about the different CCAs in YTSS as well as the DSA application process.Parents were provided with a copy of the Clarion, our in-house newsletter to give them an insight into life at YTSS and activities and programs that are available to the students in this school.

This was followed by a free an easy session where parents could stop by at various booths put up by the different CCAs. These booths were manned by students of YTSS who not only answered any queries that the parents had regarding their respective CCAs, but also allowed the primary school student visitors and their parents to try their hands on various CCA related activities.We hope that our student visitors had fun trying all the activities and parents were able to find out more about the school and will be here again for our next open day, which focusses on curriculum and academic matters and will be held on the 16th of October 2018.

Outstanding YTzens from National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC), 21st May
YTSS would like to congratulate two outstanding YTzens from National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) - Nigel Fong & Sher Li Ting, both from 4E4. Both our YTzens received the SPF-NPCC badge which is the highest award badge that cadets can vie for. The SPF-NPCC Badge was first launched in 1997 to give recognition to cadets with good leadership qualities and outstanding achievements. 

Nigel also presented Ms Yeo, our principal, with the NPCC Unit Overall Proficiency Award (Gold). The Unit Overall Proficiency Award (UOPA) is a benchmark used to rank the NPCC Units in Singapore. This is the 13th year that YTSS is obtaining this achievement! Let’s continue to inspire each other and strive for greater heights! WE WILL EXCEL!

Get R.E.A.L Festival for our Sec 1 and 2, 22nd May

Today, the English Language & Literature Department held its inaugural Literature Festival: Get R.E.A.L to encourage our YTzens to Read, Experience and Appreciate Literature. Our lower secondary students learned more about their favourite fantasy English Language books by participating in various activities such as Muggle Quiddith from Harry Potter and other interesting activities.

Today, we welcomed our 20th Student Council to office! We congratulate our 19th Student Council for their accomplishments and we look forward to witnessing the leadership of the next generation of student leaders. The 20th Student Council is led by President Muhammad Aiman B Jefren from 3E3 who is flanked by his Vice-Presidents, Rajanala Sri Priyanka from 3E4 and Lee Bing Lun from 3E3. They are supported by their Exco members and the Senior Councillors. Congratulations to our new team of leaders. Remember, with great power comes great responsibility! Let's continue to lead our YTzens with heart, joy and passion.

J M Fraser Award for Excellence Gold – Boys’ Brigade, 28th May
YTSS would like to congratulate The Boys Brigade 19th Singapore Company for achieving the J M Fraser Award for Excellence. Last Saturday, our Boys’ Brigade 19th Singapore Company flew the YTSS colours high as they received the J M Fraser Award for Excellence. Pictured here are our BB Company Sergeant Major & Deputies with Guest of Honour, Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Social & Family Development, Second Minister for National Development. Our principal, Ms Sharon Yeo, BB Teachers and officers were present as well to witness this momentous occasion. Your hard work, drive for excellence and passion for your CCA has paid off!

ELs service-learning trip to Vietnam, 17th June 
Last week, our ELs embarked on a service learning trip to An Khanh village, in the Ben Tre Province of Vietnam. The purpose of the trip was to give our ELs an opportunity to learn more about the world around them, and themselves, as leaders through community service. A big part of leadership is having the heart to serve and give back to the community. Our YTzens interacted with the students of An Khanh Primary School and taught them English Language lessons. They also helped the primary school by helping to build a classroom for the students. Our YTzens had to cement, tile and paint the pillars. It was not an easy job, but our YTzens learned how to serve from the heart, and learned other skills such as effective communication and teamwork.

Elective Modules Experience for YTzens, 1st July  
This week, our 3 Normal Academic students had the opportunity to visit ITE College Central to try hands-on Elective Modules such as Aerospace Engineering, Manga Drawing, Digital Animation and Creating Computer Games.

The MOE Elective Modules for Normal Stream students in MOE schools are offered by ITE to provide students with a glimpse of what they can expect to learn in the various courses of study in ITE, so that they are better prepared for tertiary level education. Our students truly enjoyed the experienced and some even discovered hidden talents! 

This was a great way to start Term 3 and to continue to fuel the joy of learning!

Eat with Your YTSS Family Day, 6th July  
In Term 3, the entire YTSS family gathered for our annual mass breakfast. Students, teachers and non-teaching staff alike took the opportunity to express appreciation for each other with food. Many YTzens took the time and effort to prepare sandwiches and even bake simple muffins to share with their friends. Eat with Your YTSS Family Day is always a day that the YTSS family looks forward to every year. The one hour breakfast session, where students generously serve food to their schoolmates and teachers always leaves everyone with a smile on their face. After all, there's nothing like spending time with family!

Girl Guides at the North Division Outdoor Challenge, 7th July

Today, our Girl Guides are out doing YTSS proud at the North Division Outdoor Challenge where they will be tested on their outdoor skills by creating good quality gadgets in good time. Our girls are participating in several categories, namely the Creative Gateway, Fly Your Patrol Flag, Innovative Kitchen Dresser, Tent Pitching and a special mystery challenge which requires them to create a mascot that best represents the school, using recycled materials. All the best to our Girl Guides! We will Excel!

Dress For A Good Cause Day 2018, 10th July  
Every YTzens favourite day is here once again! Dress For A Good Cause Day 2018 is a day that every YTzen looks forward to because for a nominal fee, they get to wear their home clothes to school and see their teachers decked in the full YTSS uniform or PE attire! Students spend the entire year waiting for this day to come so that they can have some fun watching their teachers dress up just like them! 

The money that YTzens raised is then donated to charity. Through a simple activity like this, YTzens learn how easy it is to do something good for their community.

Singapore River for Historical Investigation, 12th July 
This week, our Secondary 1 YTzens went to the Singapore River for their Historical Investigation to find out if the Singapore River was still a river of life. There, YTzens learnt about the change and continuity that happens along the river of life. They visited historical landmarks and iconic tourist spots such as the Fullerton Hotel, the statue of Sir Stamford Raffles and the Merlion. 

What a fun and meaningful learning experience for our YTzens to gain more insights about the history of our Singapore River.

VIA Program, 12th July
YTzens from classes 2E5 and 2E6, set up booths and different games for their respective VIA program. The topic for 2E6 was “Clean Everyday” whereas 2E5 did their VIA on the topic “Climate Change”.

YT Fiesta @ Sembawang Park, 13th July
YT Fiesta is an annual sports event where YTzens participate in a mass run of either 3.2 km or 3.6 km, orienteering or archery. The entire YTSS family comes together for a morning of fitness fun while taking in the scenic view of the sea and spending some time with nature. 

It is always a wonderful experience for everyone!

Singapore Youth Olympic Festival shooting competition, 17th July 
Our shooters took part in the Singapore Youth Olympic Festival shooting competition where Joshua Lee of 3E4 won 3rd in the under-15 pistol men category! Our rifle shooters also participated in the completion and had a great experience! Good job, everyone!

Racial Harmony Day, 20th July 

Today, our YTzens participated in our Racial Harmony Day celebrations where they got to wear different ethnic costumes and embraced the variety of cultures that we have here in Singapore by trying out food from different racial groups, getting their henna done and playing a variety of traditional games. It is noteworthy to mention that our Girl Guides did their part by preparing a pledge station to encourage YTzens to pledge their support towards creating a harmonious and inclusive Singapore.

National Schools Literature Festival 2018, 21st July 
Today, our Sec 4 Literature students spent their day at the National Schools Literature Festival 2018 where they took part in the Set Text Debate against Maris Stella High and Unseen Text Debate against Pasir Ris Crest and emerged victorious in both! 

Our students from 1E5, 2E5 and 2E6 participated in the Choral Speaking competition, Book Trailer competition and Book Parade competition respectively. Congratulations to our YTzens!

Movies Under The Stars, 28th July

Today, YTSS held our inaugural Movie Under The Stars where all YTzens and their families were invited to spend the evening with their YTSS family watching a movie screened in our very own parade square. Our Secondary 3 students played host as they set up stalls selling a variety of snacks and goodies such as popcorn, cotton candy, hot dog buns and even cupcakes! Our Sec 3s definitely showed everyone their entrepreneurial spirit.

The air was filled with the smell of sweet treats and the sound of laughter as friends spent the evening together, strengthening their bonds and even forging new friendships. It was definitely an evening to remember for everyone.

Inaugural ECG Parents Engagement Session, 29th July

As part of YTSS efforts to help our YTzens make informed decisions about their future, our Education and Career Guidance (ECG) team organised its inaugural ECG Parents Engagement Session to inform and guide parents on how to support our YTzens. The session allowed parents to understand more about their child's interests, skills and strengths as well as the post-secondary options available. 

The theme of the event was "Many Paths, New Possibilities - Guiding your child for the future". It was heartening and encouraging to see so many parents take time out of their busy schedules to spend Saturday morning learning how to better support their children.

Outstanding Science Teacher Award 2018, 30th July
YTSS would like to congratulate one of our very own ex-YTzens and current Physics teacher, Mr Danny Choi, on being awarded the Outstanding Science Teacher Award 2018. This award is a national recognition that was awarded to only 4 teachers in Singapore. Mr Choi is also the only recipient from a secondary school. Congratulations, Mr Choi!

YTzens at ASEAN School Games 2018, 1st August

In July, two of our YTzens, Mu Qi from 4N3 and Afiyah from 5N participated in the ASEAN School Games 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Through the experience, our YTzens interacted with participants of different races, backgrounds and nationality and also demonstrated values like resilience, respect and integrity. In the months leading up to the competition, they sacrificed their time and put in a lot of effort to train and bring glory to our school and our nation.

YTSS NPCC as the Guard of Honour Contingent (GOH) at the Nee Soon East National Day Carnival, 6th August
YTSS NPCC unit was selected to participate as the Guard of Honour Contingent (GOH) during the parade segment in the Nee Soon East National Day Carnival. The event was graced by Mr Louis Ng, Adviser to Nee Soon GRC Grassroots Organisation. A Certificate Of Appreciation was presented by Mr Ng to YTSS for the participation and support.

Thank you to our NPCC cadets for representing YTSS in honour of our nation’s 53rd birthday celebration! You have shown perseverance, respect and dedication and we applaud you for that! Keep up the excellent work!

The National Day concert segment was definitely one to remember as it gave YTzens the opportunity to come together as one to appreciate all that our nation has to offer through song and dance! YTzens at Singapore’s National Day Parade 2018, 9th August  
The Yishun Town Wind Orchestra (YTWO) representing the NPCC band did a great job and performed well at Singapore's National Day Parade 2018. The band invested a lot of time and effort in every single rehearsal leading up to their combined band performance during the military segment. YTWO has done YTSS and the nation proud by putting up a spectacular performance! Thank you YTWO for all the hard work and dedication!

YTzens from YTWO, invited to the Istana in appreciation of National Day Parade 2018, 16th August 
Two of our YTzens, Tay Jia Xuan (3E5) and Tay Jia Qing (3E4) who are the Band Major and Drum Major respectively of YTWO, were privileged to be invited to the Istana in recognition of Yishun Town Secondary School’s participation in the recent National Day Parade 2018.

They proudly represented our school at a tea reception hosted by Singapore’s first woman head of state, President of Singapore, Mdm Halimah Yacob and her husband Mr Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee and it definitely looks like they had an amazing time!!

Chinese Dance performance at HDB Hub, 18th August
Our Chinese Dance girls, accompanied by their teachers in charge, spent their morning at the HDB Hub in Toa Payoh where they performed at the HDB Staff Union Bursary Award and HDBSU Long Membership cum Retirement Award Presentation Ceremony. 

Such opportunities also give YTzens the chance to learn more about the different ceremonies and awards that are presented to Singaporeans! Our girls certainly did YTSS proud today as they dazzled the crowd with their skilful dance moves, vibrant costumes and wonderful smiles!

Concert to commemorate Hari Raya Haji, 20th August 
YTzens were treated to a wonderful concert by our Muslim students to commemorate Hari Raya Haji, which was celebrated at the end of June. YTzens got to learn more about these festivals through a skit, dance, a rap performance and a quiz too.

Assembly Program : VIA learning experiences and reflections, 23rd August   
During assembly, representatives from various secondary 1 classes shared their VIA learning experiences and reflections. Some classes had the opportunity to visit Ang Mo Kio Thye Hua Kwan Hospital to interact with the elderly patients while others had the chance to become ambassadors of Yishun MRT & Bus Interchange and engaged commuters by answering general enquiries and assist passengers with priority needs. 

Throughout their VIA journey, the students gave their best and displayed the school values of resilience as well as gratitude. Good job to our Secondary 1 YTzens for showing tremendous effort at their respective VIAs!

Secondary 4 inter-class Frisbee tournament, 24th August  
Our Secondary 4 students ended their preliminary examinations with an inter-class frisbee tournament! All the Sec 4 classes participated in this competition. Congratulations to Class 4N2 and Class 4E5 for their amazing performance which clinched them the title of CHAMPIONS for the boys and girls competitions respectively!

YTzens at National Camp!, 26th August
The National Camp is a platform for students from the different uniformed groups and units to interact, to share ideas and build friendships. It also aims to strengthen resilience, instill continual learning and develop a harmonious community. This year, one of our YTzens, SGT Archana from 3E3 was specially selected to share more about her experience and do an instastory takeover at @moesingapore ‘s Instastory!

Awards for participation in the BeBras Challenge, 27th August
Several students were awarded the SILVER and BRONZE Awards for their participation in the BeBras Challenge which was held in March this year. This competition introduces computational thinking and informatics. The quiz comprises of a set of questions that students can answer even without prior knowledge about computer science, but have a clear relation to the computer science concepts.

The Boys Brigade Founder’s Award (FAA), 27th August
Four of our Boys Brigade members were conferred The Boys Brigade Founder’s Award (FAA) which is the highest and most honourable award a BB boy can attain in the Seniors Programme. The award recognises boys for their outstanding performance in approved Brigade-Level activities and duties in the Brigade.

Our Secondary 4/5 students have put in a lot of effort to put up a great performance for the teachers right after their prelims! Their hard work definitely paid off well, and the the teachers along with the rest of the school enjoyed the performance thoroughly.

'Dialogue in the Dark' experience at NgeeAnn Polytechnic, 19th September
Our Secondary 2 YTzens attended the 'Dialogue in the Dark' program organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic. This 3 days event provided them with a learning experience to appreciate the value of effective communication, social awareness and empathy for people with visual and other impairments. The students learnt alot during this special experience and developed empathy towards others.

Secondary 3 students embarked on a learning journey to @unpackt.sg for the past 3 weeks, where they extended their learning on Waste Disposal and Management and zero waste lifestyles, a topic that they covered in during English Language lessons in Term 3.

YTzens from Sec 3NA & NT D&T participated in the ‘Powering Lives Challenge through Engineering' competition organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic, School of Engineering. The competition was aimed at allowing students to understand various engineering fields, such as Mechanical, Mechatronics, Automation, Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering. This was a good opportunity for our YTzens to acquire and apply problem-based learning and Design Thinking skills.

Open Day 2 in YTSS, 19th October
The aim of this program is to allow participants to learn about the subjects and the learning opportunities available at YTSS. Our principal Ms Yeo gave an informative talk about YTSS together with a skit put up by our students Khay Yee, Muba and Adam, as well as our teacher Ms Shereen. There were also various booths planned out by the different departments and committees.

Yishun Town Girl Guides Unit visit to Katapult Trampoline Park, 21st October  

Yishun Town Girl Guides Unit visited Katapult Trampoline Park to learn the different techniques of trampolining while having fun! In alignment with one of the Guides’ five-point programmes, on Personal Care and Development, the Guides learnt different ways to stay active, keeping themselves fit and managing stress.

As part of their post-exam activity of the week, the Secondary 1 YTzens started off with a trip to Fort Canning Park for their sculpture walk. There, they learnt how to appreciate and admire the different sculptures made by our very own Singaporeans! YTzens thoroughly enjoyed their trip!

Handball competition, 22nd October 
YTzens from secondary 2 showed great sportsmanship for the preliminary round for the handball competition. They were seen putting in their best efforts to create the best memories for their classes!! Through the competition they have demonstrated our school values of resilience, gratitude, integrity and respect.

YTzens from class 3T7 hosted students all the way from Seisho High School Japan! The students from Seisho High were able to get a feel of how it’s like schooling in Singapore and they had a memorable experience here in YTSS with their marvellous hosts.

YTMC Celebration of Learning at Sentosa, 22nd October 
The Yishun Town Monitor Council went to Sentosa for YTMC Celebration of Learning. The secondary 1 to 3 Class Monitors and Assistant Class Monitors had the opportunity to work together in groups to overcome challenges that revolves around the 5 Practices of Student Leadership.

Career Guidance Program: Bloomberg visit, 23rd October
As part of the school's Education and Career Guidance's effort, our Sec 3 YTSS girls attended a sharing session with girls from other Secondary Schools at Bloomberg, Singapore. They managed to hear from a panel of female leaders from tech companies (Google and Bloomberg) who shared inspiring stories of their career journey and also to network with the employees of Bloomberg.

SensaYTion programme at Aliwal Art Centre, 24th October
Secondary 2 YTzens attended the SensaYTion programme at Aliwal Art Centre and they saw beautiful artworks done by our very own YTzens. They also got to learn new skills like water colouring. In a nutshell, it was a meaningful and fun experience for the students.

“My Joy from Learning” Festival, 25th October
Secondary 1 YTzens had a special learning festival: “My Joy from Learning”. The festival commenced with a sharing by one of our teachers, Ms Shereen, who is also the founder of Eiding The Feast, which is a non-profit volunteer group aimed at helping to bring joy to children through food and desserts. This was followed by a share session from an invited speaker about her joy of learning. Students then had presentations by fellow YTzens about their talent development programmes, and what they have learnt throughout the months.

Visit to Singapore Tractor Corporation, 30th October
30 of our girls visited Singapore Tractor Co. Ltd to understand the use of technology in construction machinery, customer service as well try their hand at operating the caterpillar excavator at a Kranji site. Although the construction industry is perceived to be a male dominated one, the experience gave our YTzens the chance to see that there are actually females in this line too. Such opportunities, organised by YTSS’ Education & Career Guidance team, are a great way for our students to learn more about what is happening in the real world and the sort of skills needed for them to succeed in the future!

Parent Support Group (PSG)’s Family Bonding Activity at Safra Yishun, 3rd November
Our Parent Support Group (PSG) held their Annual PSG Family Bonding Activity at Safra Yishun! They spent the morning bowling and bonding together! YTSS PSG members are a very important group of people! They work closely with the school to help our YTzens achieve their best by providing a holistic education for us. Our PSG meet regularly through formal and informal settings to share ideas and suggestions for the betterment of all YTzens and organise activities which are aligned to the school’s programmes and events to give YTzens a wonderful schooling experience!

Overseas Trip: Beijing, China for a week of cross-cultural learning experience, 9th November
YTzens from Sec 3s headed to Beijing, China for a week of cross-cultural learning experience. Some highlights of their trip include exposing them to the natural wonders and cultural treasures of Beijing, engaging them in exchanges with our twinning school, culture learning journey to Hutong Courtyard on trishaws, and an industry visit to the Coca Cola Factory.

Yishun Town NPCC Band performance with the Singapore Police Force Band, 9th November
Our Yishun Town NPCC Band performed together with the Singapore Police Force Band at the launch of ChariTrees, a charity initiative to remind the community of the needy during the festive spirit. Our band played 10 songs for a captive audience and everyone was mesmerised by their wonderful music.

Da Nang, Vietnam for cross-cultural learning journey, 10th November 

Our Sec 3s headed to Da Nang, Vietnam for their cross-cultural learning journey. They spent most of their time in Central Vietnam, which hardly ever appears on many tour packages by our local tour Operators, so it’s really a unique experience for our YTzens.

RippleUX Drone Micro : Bit Challenge Competition, a national drone competition, 10th November 

15 Infocomm: Robotics team members from Sec 1 and 2 took part in RippleUX Drone Micro:Bit Challenge Competition, a national drone competition. The competition required participants to design a poster with the theme of "Real Life and Future Application of Drones", code the Micro:Bit hardware and set the drone on a pre-coded flight path according to the competition map layout which was revealed to the students only during the competition.

After lots of hard work, training and preparation, our YTzens emerged victorious by clinching two awards: Fastest Pilot and Overall Champions!

Kyoto, Nara and Osaka for cross-cultural learning journey to Japan, 11th November 
YTzens from Sec 3 headed to Kyoto, Nara and Osaka for their cross-cultural learning journey to Japan. They had school exchanges with Sagano High School and Yamashiro High School and also had many opportunities for hands-on activities to fully immerse themselves in the Japanese Culture.

YTSS Girl Guides have been awarded the Baden Powell Award (BPA), 17th November 
Six of our YTSS Girl Guides have been awarded the Baden Powell Award (BPA). The Baden Powell Award (BPA) is the highest award given out by the Girl Guides Chief Commissioner to a Girl Guide. To be awarded this highest accolade as a Girl Guide, a Guide must go through a rigorous process of sitting for and excelling in a written test as well as an execution test of skills learned during their time in Girl Guides. Kudos to our YTSS Girl Guides.

YTSS NCDCC cadet, on cadet exchange programme to Hong Kong, 17th November
One of our YTzens from the NCDCC unit, flew to Hong Kong as part of an exciting cadet exchange programme organised by the NCDCC HQ. This overseas educational visit to Hong Kong was designed for the cadet participants to interact with with Hong Kong Civil Aid Service at a new campsite by the sea in Tai Tan.

During the eventful YTSS Open House, our principal, Ms Yeo shared with the visitors on the achievements and programmes inn YTSS. YTzens, from various levels shared their learning experiences in YTSS such as the activities they had during their Beyond Classroom Week, their experiences in council and their CCAs. It was a fun filled, and exciting day where the school grounds was bustling with activities and  programs to keep the visitors informed and entertained with details on YTSS and what it offers.

Girl Guides selling cookies at Ang Mo Kio NTUC Fairprice, 26th November 
Our Yishun Town Girl Guides sold Girl Guides cookies at Ang Mo Kio NTUC Fairprice. This is an annual program organised by Girl Guides where cookies are sold to raise funds which support many of their Brownie and Guide programmes.

YTSS Boys Brigade 19th Company collaborated with VISA on financial literacy, 30th November    
Members of YTSS Boys Brigade 19th Company collaborated with VISA to learn more about financial literacy. This was a 3 hour workshop where they learnt more about financial concepts and participated in games to learn more about the value of money, the importance of saving and how to budget wisely. In addition to that, our boys also learnt about prioritising, the difference between needs and wants and how to be smart when it comes to handling their income in the future.
