Appreciating the Craft of Ceramics
Ceramics history spans over 26,000 years, beginning with Paleolithic figurines (c. 29,000–25,000 BC) and evolving into crucial functional pottery for storage by 9000 BC. Major milestones include the development of the potter's wheel in Mesopotamia (c. 3500 BC), the invention of durable porcelain in China (618–907 CE), and the industrialization of ceramic production.
Ceramic techniques are broadly categorized into forming (handbuilding, wheel throwing, casting) and decorating/finishing (glazing, carving, firing). Common techniques include pinching, coiling, slab building, throwing on a wheel, and slip casting. Surface design techniques like sgraffito, carving, and applying glazes or luster further define the final appearance.
